My step-daughter has been told by her mother and step-father that it%26#039;s bad for your teeth/mouth to have ANYONE BUT the dentist pull out your loose teeth. I personally think it%26#039;s just another lie that%26#039;s being told to my step-daughter to make my husband seem like a bad person to want to pull her loose teeth out. Anyone out there know if it hurts your mouth or teeth in any way if you pull your loose teeth out yourself versus spending a bill and having the dentist do it?
Is it bad for your mouth or teeth if you pull them out when they%26#039;re loose versus the dentist pulling them out?
When we were little, my family%26#039;s dentist said to let the teeth fall out naturally, don%26#039;t yank them out. The new tooth is pushing up, only when there is signs on an xray that it is impacted or going in a odd direction do you need to do anything.
Now that I am grown, my Grandfather has periodontal disease - his dentist advised if the tooth is loose and hurts, %26quot;let him try to pull it out, and if he can%26#039;t I will if the pain increases.%26quot; A dentist who has experience with dementia patients is a Godsend, btw.
Basically let the loose teeth work their way out without a yank from the string on the door or dentist. The later can actually be more painful, and definitely more costly.
Reply:I agree with your assessment. If the tooth is lose, it will normally fall out on it%26#039;s own, so it%26#039;s not going to do much to pull it out yourself. Now if you%26#039;re yanking so hard you need pliers, then don%26#039;t mess with it. Otherwise it%26#039;s fine.
Reply:When I was younger, I would always pull my own teeth out. They have to be really loose though. It does hurt quite a bit, it helps if you pull it out quickly, otherwise your just tugging on the nerve which can cause quite a lot of pain.
Reply:I never once had a dentist pull any of my baby teeth. When they were loose they would just fall out, or I would wiggle them out. People always said my teeth were going to be crooked because I would pull them out myself. I have a perfectly straight smile. Genetics is what determines the appearence of permanent teeth.
Reply:Sure it is . You could leave a part of the root in there and develop infection ..or worse .
Reply:Most children DO lose their %26quot;baby%26quot; teeth without the benefit of a dentist. I myself had such long roots most of my baby teeth had to be pulled (the other ones grew in behind them--I can still remember feeling double rows of teeth), but I did proudly %26quot;pull%26quot; a few of them myself (lost one just eating hard taffy or carmel--it just %26quot;popped out%26quot; to my amazement and surprise, didn%26#039;t hurt a bit, barely bled....HINT HINT), and there was no difference as far as the healing process or anything. All of my teeth grew in exactly the same whether they were pulled by the dentist or myself.
