Help our dogs teeth are loose. He's gone to the dentist ever since he was little.?

Our dogs tongue hangs out slightly no matter what ... and that is contributing to his loose teeth. They are healthy but the gums are not. Our vet said it%26#039;s common for dogs to have this problem when they are older. What should we do. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Some breeds are more prone to dental issues. It is not uncommon to have the problem teeth extracted. (pulled) to promote a healthier mouth. I have known some pom%26#039;s whom have had to have every one of their teeth removed and they do well on a soft diet. If his teeth are not causing him pain then he%26#039;s fine for now. But a full extraction may be in his future.

Best of luck to you.
Reply:sorry, not much can be done since this is natural, but if you think there is something that can be done, get another opinion from a different vet than the one you go to.

Maybe there is a way :-) Good luck my friend :-)
Reply:What the heck does %26quot;he%26#039;s gone to the dentist ever since he was little%26quot; mean? Dogs don%26#039;t go to the dentist.

If the dog has loose teeth, there is something wrong with the teeth or gums and it need attention by the vet!!!! Dental disease is COMMON in older dogs, but does not need to happen. Good care of the dog and the teeth and gums can prevent this.

Yes, there are veterinary dentists. They do things like implants, crowns, and other specialized procedures. They do not see the average dog for %26quot;check-ups%26quot;!!!!!
Reply:What type of dog?

If a Chihauhau or any part of, they tend to have teeth falling out with age.

So what specific type of dog,... and never heard of dog%26#039;s having a %26quot;dentist%26quot;.
Reply:The vet may have to look at the other loose teeth. His poor tongue will always hang out, because there is no teeth holding his tongue in.

Try soft foods, watered down, not puppy food, because that will give him diarrhea. Anyway, soft foods is good for a dog with bad teeth.

Take him to the vet and he may need to be put on antibiotics if any teeth are infected. Good luck. He will be fine.
Reply:when is the last time your dog had a dental cleaning? not just brushing his teeth, but actually having him anesthetized and having them scaled? plaque and tarter that build up underneath the gum line are usually the cause for loose teeth and some breeds are more prone to this.

advice- have bloodwork done on your dog to make sure he is healthy, then have a dental done by your vet. see if your vet has a product called doxi-robe gel or something similar that they can pack around the loose teeth to try and help them tighten up.

also, to the person who said dogs dont have dentists? um, yeah, believ it or not, there are acutally veterinary dentists who do nothing else but teeth.
Reply:Have the teeth pulled. All of them. You don%26#039;t want the dog to have heart disease which is what gum disease will cause. Dogs without teeth do fine. Their infections are gone, their hearts are safer and all the constant problems with teeth are gone. They eat just fine without them.
