A friend told me about tooth loss after chemo, and I am worried now. Anyone had that experience?
Can you loose your teeth from chemo?
I had chemo and did not experience this but there are different kinds of chemo with different side effects so it would be best to discuss this with your oncologist.
Reply:yes-any type of chemotherapy can result in teeth loss. i always tell those who are going on chemo to get to the dentist before treatment begins and get complete checkup and fix any problems before hand. chemotherapy also makes your bones dry and brittle.
chemotherapy makes your mouth dry, chapped and warm. since many experience a loss of saliva, it isn't there to keep your mouth moist or to "rinse" away so to speak germs and food particles.
there is mouthwash available to those on chemo, usually found at your local pharmacy store. ask the pharmacist what brand it is. also, chew regular sweetened gum as well as drink lots of fluids. the more fluids you drink, the less the side effects too!
good luck!
Reply:Absolutly. As the person said above me with the changes in your mouth. Mainly, the lack of saliva. Your saliva helps 'wash' off the plaque and sugar. Not to mention a lot of people experience mouth sores and overly sensitive gums making brushing difficult.
I had never had a cavaty with my perm teeth up until the last couple years with chemo. I have had 4 teeth filled, one pulled, and I have another that needs to be filled as soon as I am cleared to have dental work done again.
